Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor C. Joseph Vijay is set to wave the ceremonial green flag at the penultimate round of the 2026 Michelin Le Mans Cup at Silverstone, marking a major moment for Indian motorsport on the international stage.
The fifth round of the 2026 championship will take place at the iconic Silverstone Circuit in the United Kingdom on September 12, with Vijay attending the event as a special guest.
The occasion will have an especially strong Indian connection, with Ajith Kumar, Narain Karthikeyan and Aditya Patel all competing at the historic British circuit.
Three Indians on the Silverstone Grid
Actor and racer Ajith Kumar will compete in the LMP3 Pro/Am category for Ajith RedAnt by Virage. He will share the No. 16 Ligier JS P325-Toyota with French driver Romain Vozniak.
Ajith has continued to build his reputation in international motorsport after returning to competitive racing, moving from GT racing into prototype machinery and endurance competition.
The Silverstone round will also feature an all-Indian pairing in the LMP3 category.
Former Formula 1 driver Narain Karthikeyan will team up with Aditya Patel for Ajith RedAnt Racing. The duo will race the No. 36 Ligier JS P325-Toyota.
For Indian motorsport fans, the presence of three Indian drivers across the Silverstone grid represents one of the strongest international showings for the country in recent endurance racing.
Vijay to Start the Race
The Michelin Le Mans Cup confirmed Vijay’s participation ahead of the weekend, announcing that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister would officially start the Silverstone round in front of a 44-car grid.
The race will be held over two hours on Silverstone’s 5.891-kilometre Grand Prix circuit, one of the most famous venues in world motorsport.
Vijay’s appearance also carries significance beyond the race itself. His government has recently announced plans for a dedicated Motor Sports City in Tamil Nadu, with the project aimed at strengthening the state’s motorsport infrastructure and developing opportunities for future racing talent.
A Bigger Push for Motorsport in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu already has a strong connection with India’s automotive and motorsport industries, and the proposed Motor Sports City is intended to take that ecosystem to another level.
The state government’s plans include facilities designed to support motorsport across multiple levels, from grassroots development and driver training to higher-level racing.
The initiative has received support from Ajith Kumar, who has been vocal about the importance of developing infrastructure and creating opportunities for young Indian racers.
Following Vijay’s Silverstone visit, Ajith also expressed hope that India could eventually host a round of the Michelin Le Mans Cup.
For Ajith, the development of motorsport infrastructure is particularly relevant as he continues to compete internationally.
Why the Le Mans Cup Matters
The Michelin Le Mans Cup, launched in 2016, is an endurance racing championship that provides a pathway for drivers and teams looking to progress towards higher levels of endurance racing, including the European Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Unlike Formula 1, where drivers compete individually in single-seater cars, endurance racing involves sharing a car with a teammate and managing factors such as tyre degradation, fuel strategy, traffic, changing weather and race pace.
