After a spin in qualifying at the Silverstone Circuit, Sergio Perez was eliminated, marking yet another challenging performance.
Max Verstappen has rallied behind his Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, following a tough qualifying session at Silverstone. Perez, who spun out during the early stages of Q1 in variable conditions, ended up in the gravel, concluding his session prematurely. This setback places the 24-year-old starting 19th on the grid for Sunday’s British Grand Prix, just ahead of Pierre Gasly, who faces a substantial engine penalty.
When questioned about the potential challenge of competing solo against rival teams, Verstappen remained pragmatic. “I try not to think about it. At the end of the day, you always have to do it yourself; no one is going to help you in a race,” he commented. Despite the unfortunate loss of Perez in Q1, Verstappen is optimistic about their chances on race day. “We need to wait and see what the weather does, but if we have a clean car, we can be in the mix. I’m not saying we’ll be the quickest, but being in the mix always opens up possibilities.”
This incident marks the fifth time in the last six races that Perez has failed to make it to the top 10 shootout during qualifying. Verstappen, however, attributes Perez’s misfortune to bad luck rather than a lack of pace. “It’s unlucky and unfortunate what happened,” he said, noting Perez’s strong performance in FP2. “It’s unfair to say that he’s been off this weekend. He looked decent yesterday.”
Verstappen’s defense of Perez underscores the Red Bull team’s resilience and determination to overcome obstacles as they gear up for a challenging race day at Silverstone.
