After a thrilling finish to the Austrian Grand Prix last weekend that saw the drivers from Red Bull and McLaren collide, Max Verstappen has shared some of the topics he and Lando Norris discussed.

In the high-octane world of Formula 1, clashes on the track often result in strained relationships off it. However, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris demonstrated that fierce competition can coexist with strong friendships. At the recent Red Bull Ring race, the duo engaged in an electrifying battle for the lead, culminating in a wheel-to-wheel contact that left both with punctures. While Verstappen managed to secure a fifth-place finish, Norris was forced to retire due to additional damage.

Post-race emotions ran high, but the following day, a calm and constructive conversation between the two drivers brought clarity and resolution. Verstappen, reflecting on their discussion, emphasized the importance of maintaining their friendship. “The only thing that I cared about is maintaining my relationship with Lando because we are great friends,” Verstappen shared. He explained that their immediate post-race reactions needed to cool down before they could analyze the incident objectively.

Their chat revealed a mutual appreciation for the battle, despite the unfortunate consequences. “We actually really enjoyed our battle,” Verstappen said. “It was such a silly, little touch that had great consequences, especially for Lando. But we like to race hard. We’ve done this for many years, not only in F1 but also in online racing. These things have to carry on because that’s what we like to do, and it’s great for F1 as well.”

The pair’s discussion covered their approaches and trust in each other on the track. “We agree on 99% of everything,” Verstappen noted. “When you go for moves, you can trust me that I’m not there to try and crash you out of the way, and it’s the same the other way around. These are human reactions in racing, but everything I did was nothing massively over the top.”

Verstappen also reflected on the nature of friendships in F1, especially when competing for top honors. “It depends a bit on your personalities,” he said. “Lando is a great guy, very passionate about F1. He’s fighting for his second potential win, while I’m fighting for my 62nd. Naturally, your emotions are a little bit different.”

Looking ahead to Silverstone, Verstappen anticipated another close battle with Norris. “I still expect it to be very close. Last year here, McLaren were flying, so they will be quick again.”

The camaraderie between Verstappen and Norris serves as a reminder that while the competition in F1 is fierce, the respect and friendship among drivers can prevail, adding an extra layer of excitement and human connection to the sport.
