Although Lewis Hamilton still experiences a “huge thrill” from racing in Formula One, he is unsure if he would continue in the championship if he lost that feeling.

At 39 years old, Hamilton is gearing up for a new chapter with Ferrari in the 2025 F1 season, marking his 19th consecutive year in the championship. While other drivers, such as the 43-year-old Fernando Alonso, have had their careers interrupted by breaks, Hamilton’s enduring passion for racing remains evident. Hamilton recently reflected on the euphoric experience he feels when driving an F1 car. “For me personally, when I get strapped in for the first time and they start up the car, I get the same bubbly feeling inside,” Hamilton explained. “And then when everyone moves the tyre blankets away and you pull out into the pit lane and drive out into Turn 1 and just do your first lap, I always get a huge thrill.” These moments, which he describes as “pinch myself” experiences, highlight his genuine passion for racing.
The British driver admitted that this enduring sense of excitement is likely what has kept him in F1 for so long. If he were to lose this feeling of exhilaration, he suggested that he would probably shift his focus away from racing. “If I was numb to it, that would really suck,” Hamilton confessed. “I’d probably be doing something else.” The idea of losing the thrill that he currently experiences is something he dreads, emphasizing how integral it is to his decision to keep racing.
Hamilton also mused about what could replace the thrill of F1 if he ever decided to retire. “But the cool thing… and it’s probably why I’m still racing, is that it’s not become such the norm that I don’t feel it,” he said. “If I was numb to it, I’d probably be doing something else. But I’d have to fly fighter jets or something… to come anywhere near close.” His light-hearted mention of flying fighter jets underscores the depth of his passion for racing and the high standards he sets for himself in terms of excitement and engagement.
