A 600kW fast charger will be required for drivers to stop and replenish the battery.

After a seven-year hiatus, the concept of pit stops is returning to Formula E, but not in the way fans might remember. Gone are the days of mandatory car swaps due to limited battery capacity; this time, Formula E is introducing an innovative and futuristic feature known as Pit Boost. This bold step is set to make its debut at the highly anticipated Jeddah E-Prix next month, on February 14-15, and promises to revolutionize the racing landscape while showcasing the forefront of electric vehicle technology.

Pit Boost will mandate a 10 percent battery recharge during the race, achieved through a high-powered 600kW fast charger. To put this into perspective, some of the fastest charging electric vehicles in the consumer market, like the Mercedes-Benz EQS, cap their charging rate at around 200kW. The staggering leap to 600kW underlines the ambition of Formula E to push boundaries. The recharge itself will take approximately 30 seconds, adding an intriguing layer of strategy to the competition, as teams will need to decide the optimal moment to stop without compromising track position.

This revolutionary pit stop concept is more than just a showcase of technical prowess—it is a reflection of Formula E’s relentless drive to stay ahead in motorsport innovation. While pit stops of the past were born out of necessity, the new Pit Boost initiative highlights the series’ vision for the future, combining sustainability with electrifying action on track. With Attack Mode already providing drivers with a temporary power surge and unlocking all-wheel drive capabilities, the introduction of Pit Boost further amplifies the strategic complexity of Formula E races.

The masterminds behind this transformation, including Formula E co-founder and Chief Championship Officer Alberto Longo, are confident about the potential of Pit Boost. Describing it as one of the most ambitious advancements in motorsport, Longo highlighted the excitement and unpredictability it will bring. The added layer of strategy will not only test the ingenuity of teams but also keep fans on the edge of their seats as drivers navigate the high-stakes decision-making required to master this game-changing format.

The debut of Pit Boost at the Jeddah E-Prix is the result of over two years of rigorous testing and simulation, designed to ensure both performance and safety. Beyond Jeddah, this innovative feature is expected to roll out during other double-header rounds, with iconic circuits such as Monaco, Tokyo, and London already being considered. Formula E’s decision to implement Pit Boost in multiple locations reflects the series’ commitment to making every race an immersive and unforgettable experience.

Adding to the challenge, teams will only be allowed one Pit Boost stop per car at a time, forcing them to carefully balance energy replenishment with track position. The timing of the mandatory stop will remain a tightly controlled variable, as teams will receive specific information about the availability of Pit Boost 21 days prior to each race. Furthermore, the pit lane rules are equally stringent, with no more than two crew members allowed to work on the car during the recharge. A third member will be specifically assigned to ensure a safe release, minimizing any risks during the high-pressure moments.

The introduction of Pit Boost is more than a technical enhancement—it is a glimpse into the future of electric mobility. Formula E’s commitment to transferring its trackside innovations to consumer vehicles is evident, with Pit Boost marking a milestone in fast-charging technology. It reflects a bold step forward not only for motorsport but also for the electric vehicle industry, showcasing what is possible when the worlds of racing and technology converge.

As the countdown to the Jeddah E-Prix begins, excitement is reaching fever pitch among fans, teams, and drivers alike. With the promise of dramatic overtakes, thrilling moments, and a new level of strategic gameplay, Pit Boost is set to deliver a spectacle that will keep viewers captivated. The stage is set for Formula E to once again redefine the boundaries of motorsport, proving that the fusion of speed, strategy, and sustainability is the way forward.
