A Costly Oversight in Montreal’s Unpredictable Weather
Due to a strange mistake made by driver Charles Leclerc during the second practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix, Ferrari has been fined by the FIA. Leclerc used intermediate tires on the track before the circuit was formally declared wet, and the team was fined €5,000 for it.
During the FP2 session, Leclerc ventured out on intermediates in the face of changing weather conditions. The rules state that wet or intermediate tires may only be used after the race director declares the course wet, therefore the stewards eventually concluded that Ferrari had sent him out too soon.
The Scuderia’s miscalculation has cost them money, compounding the difficulties they have faced this weekend due to unpredictable weather and Leclerc’s grid penalty for changing engine parts. As the team gets ready for the next qualifying and race sessions, their decision-making in Montreal’s unpredictable weather will probably be a topic of reflection.
